LIFELINE JANUARY, 2010
This LIFELINE is an experiment. I am typing it in Word, as it seems to be the most commonly used program. I will be mailing this issue, but also sending it out via computer to many of you. If sending the newsletter via computer works out satisfactorily, and we decide to do so, we will save the club money that we could use more wisely. Those of you who do not have email will still have a copy of the LIFELINE mailed to you each month. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VICE COMMODORE: Hey everyone! Your new Vice Commodore here. Thank you ALL for making my past year as Rear Commodore so much fun. I’ll be hoping for just as much fun this year as your Vice! As I mentioned at the social meeting, we will be having a highway pickup in March for our Spring cleaning of the highway. More later. Also, keep in mind the Tacoma Yacht Club’s Daffodil Parade in April. More information will be presented about that event when we receive our packet form Tacoma Yacht Club. Think about attending this fun event! If I didn’t see you in Port Townsend; hopefully you will be at our social on February 4th. Diana Austin, VC
FLEET CAPTAIN: A blind man walks into a bar and sits up on the stool. He says to the bartender, “Hey, want to hear a blonde joke?” The bartender says, “Well, before you tell it, I think you should know that I am a blonde; the bouncer is a blonde; there are two really angry blonde women at the table behind you; and the cocktail waitress is a 5’ 10” blonde. Do you still want to tell a blonde joke?” The blind man answers, “Not if I have to explain it 5 times!” That’s the premise for my thinking about my Lifeline articles this year. I am going to concentrate on NEW information each month – the upcoming cruises. If you really want to know who the big winners of the game prizes are each month, come to the social or the outing! SO – the February outing will be to Longbranch Marina, the weekend of 19-21. Please plan to be “Intrepid” and venture out for a tribute to our “cold” genes! We’ll have plenty of activities to help stay warm, and fun also! See you there… On Memorial Day weekend (May 28-31) we will be having our annual First Mate’s Cruise to Bremerton Dock “B”. This would be for three nights. We have firmed up the location and have made reservations for 20 boats. PLEASE consider attending this cruise; the entire weekend will be the Kitsap Harbor Festival, with events in Bremerton and Port Orchard and a foot ferry runs between them. I’ll have more information later, but would like to get a handle on how many will be attending. I’ll have a sign up sheet for Memorial Day at the February social, so please sign up early if you know you can make it. Appreciate it. See you on the water! Sue Patterson, FC

LIFELINE SUPPLEMENT JANUARY, 2010
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Being there were a few email ‘incidents’ of omission in the original LIFELINE this month I am doing a second posting. Also, to bring you up to date, there was a discussion at the Board meeting on January 28th and the Board has decided that an electronic LIFELINE is the way to go. So this is the beginning of a new era for Shelton Yacht Club’s newsletter. If any of you who receive your LIFELINE in this manner do not wish to participate, please let me know and I will send your news via US mail. If you receive this issue by US mail, I will continue sending it in this manner unless I’m informed otherwise. I thank those of you who have made positive comments thus far; they are much appreciated. Jean
COMMODORE: What an honor it is to be the COMMODORE of the SYC. Everyone is so great and supportive. I think I could get use to this after awhile. We just finished the Port Townsend Land Cruise with a record number of attendees. At the Harborside Inn we had 20 rooms booked which made the hotel staff very happy, and the meeting room available to us for get-togethers. The merchants around town were extremely supportive and helpful. Many of the gifts donated during this outing will be used as prizes on future outings, so watch for them as the year goes on. Thanks to all who attended; we had a beautiful weekend. A big thanks to my Fleet Captain, Sue, for all the help and foresight she provided. Boat Christenings – If any members have a boat that hasn’t been christened, please let Fleet Captain, Sue Patterson know. We can also do re-naming if your boat requires that. These are fun to do and we will present you with a special certificate for your boat. The Fleet Captain will need a couple weeks lead time for preparation for the ceremony. Call as soon as you know which outing you would like to have either of these ceremonies performed. (Sue @ 360 427 7731 or suepatterson@msn.com) Bill Mallows Award – During the March social the club members will vote on a member to receive the Bill Mallows Award. Please start thinking along these lines and nominate someone you think deserving. The service to the club may include work parties, serving time on the board or bridge, putting in many hours on a specific project or a combination of good deeds to benefit the club and its members. Please let me hear from you by phone, letter or email.
Ken Cook, Commodore
SEA BREEZES EDITOR/PUBLISHER: I would like to thank all the contributors to this years 2010 edition of the Sea Breezes for their hard work in providing information for our annual publication! I would especially like to thank Neal Stolberg for stepping up in the final days before publication to produce the photo collage. With very little knowledge of Publisher he put the collage together in days!! My heartfelt thanks to Neal, as we would not have a 2010 edition in our hands now if it weren’t for him. Note: he was awarded the “Good Deed Award” at the Change of Watch social on January 7th. Other contributors worked many hours also to provide their piece of work. They were: Dick & Dona Thompson, Reciprocal Chairpersons; Kurt Kingman and Ken Cook, Sea Breezes Advertizing Solicitors; and Jim Callea, Photographer (assisted by his daughter, Meg ) Meg came through for us even while recovering from serious health issues and surgery! Many, many thanks to you all!!! We have five new advertisers this year; they are: **Arbonne (personal care, spa, cosmetics, and anti-aging products), ** Grove Street Brewhouse and Tea Parlor, **Land Title Co., **Scentsy Wickless Candle Products, ** Taqueria Las Palmas. Please patronize our advertisers whenever you can, and when you do, PLEASE REMEMBER TO TELL THEM YOU SAW THEIR AD IN THE SYC SEA BREEZES, so they will be inclined to renew their ad with us each year. Our advertising revenue brought in enough to pay for our Sea Breezes publishing costs, minus about $70. Next year we plan to increase that revenue so we will exceed our costs. Any year we have excess revenue generated by our advertisers they will fund other SYC projects and activities. So I am asking for everyone’s help in obtaining new advertisers for the coming year – anyone who would be willing to call on new businesses this year please give me a call or send me an email expressing your interest. Training is minimal, but the rewards are great. Sheryl Nilsen has already stepped forward to volunteer to help – WAY2GO, Sheryl!! Who else is out there?? Since we’ve lost one of last years solicitors (he became Commodore and thinks he will be too busy to do advertising work), I will need several people to replace him; as he got nearly all of the new advertisers again this past year. Anyone you do business with is approachable. I obtained two new advertisers last year just by mentioning our publication. If we all do that, we can really make a difference and bring in needed revenue to help the Club. So put on your thinking caps and give me a call with your ideas!! Again, many thanks and have a great New Year – may it be your best yet! Judene Cook
BOATHOUSE STANDARDS: The Port of Shelton, together with a committee of boathouse owners and others are developing standards and rules for boathouses. A draft copy of the rules can be obtained from the Port of Shelton or on-line from Terrad@portofshelton.com . Several yacht club members have attended all the meetings and have given input from a boathouse owner’s perspective. There are several areas in the draft standards that, if approved, will affect most boathouses in the marina. For example all floats and bumpers must be of approved materials. Encapsulated styrene or concrete are about the only choices so far. Rubber tires will no longer be allowed. Other areas covered will include boathouse color and type of roofing and siding. Aluminum will no longer be allowed. There will be a time frame for compliance. As presently written, owners will have a 5 year period to upgrade. This may change as more hearings are held. It is important that you get involved and discuss your concerns with the Port and with our Marina representative, Mike Byrne.
